Emmy Awards 2011 Red Carpet Trends: Pink Dresses, Red Dresses, Blue Dresses, White Dresses
red
For quite some time I have loved blue as a red carpet colour. It has a bit of gravitas to it. And it stands out. Several of the women attending the 63rd Annual Prime Time Emmy Awards 2011 wore this colour and it was probably the most successful of the colour choices. Take Minka Kelly for example (from Parenthood, and now shooting Charlie's Angels). She was wearing that lovely lace Dior dress. And looked super-lovely. Glee's Diana Aragon was shimmering in electric blue Roksanda Ilincic. Loving the colour and some of the drape, but felt that overall it was a tad awkward. Parks and Recreation's Amy Poehler was resplendent in Peter Som — beautifully fitted — very nice. Katie Holmes rocked the 'new' neckline from Calvin Klein and was very successful. In fact I think that this is the best she has looked lately. And Emily Blunt wins this blue round for me with the big guns, Elie Saab. Beautiful.
How about the ladies in pink, though? There is something about pink that makes the wearer look pretty without even trying. One of my fave's Rashida Jones looks particularly lovely — just the right side of sherbety and beautifully sculpted to fit. Alberta Ferretti takes the credit for this confection. Lovely. Best of the pinks for me. Which is not to say that Jayma Mays from Glee in Zuhair Murad, Sarah Hyland from Modern Family in Christian Siriano and Zooey Deschenel in Monique Lhuillier don't also stunning. For they do. All lovely. Especially that red ribbon action on the latter.
Red was a popular colour choice as well last night. If I had believed the Twitter feed, everyone was wearing it. When actually the most dominant colour trend was in fact the pale base with the sparkling detail (see below). But there were a number of ladies rocking out in red. Starting with Glee's Michelle Lea in Marchesa. It really suits her. It is a diva dress, slightly over egged, just like her. The winner in this red dress category is of course Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang. Fitted to perfection. Styled with those ginormous Columbian emerald earrings, she looked a million bucks. I WISH SHE WAS MY FRIEND. Vampire Diaries Nina Dobrev wore a Donna Karan origami hem dress and looked very elegant and Kerry Washington looked very delicate in this red-pearl embroidered Zuhair Murad dress.
Wrapping up  the colour trends was the pale beaded selection. The jury is out on the winner of this selection, but I am going to go with Christina Hendricks in Johanna Johnson. The boobs are perfectly placed for once and her figure is shown off in all its glory. The only down-side for me is the tone of the dress against her skin. Not sure that it a winning combo. 30 Rock's Jane Krakowski was wearing a J. Mendel dress but I kinda miss her preggers self from all the awards shows at the beginning of the year. It made me love her a bit. Maria Bello wore Kaufman Franco and looked beautiful. Dexter's sister Jennifer Carpenter looked amazing in a classic rendition of this type of dress by Tony Ward Couture. And finally The Good Wife, Julianna Marguiles looked beautiful (as ever) almost despite the rather stiff Armani Prive she was wearing. But let's be honest. JM could wear a paper bag and look incredible. I love her.
