Probably the dress of the night in Cannes on day 1 — walking the red carpet at the premier of the new Woody Allen fliek — was Rachel McAdam's Marchesa silk mesh and lace sensation. By keeping her heels nude and outlawing all accessories, the dress was allowed to shine. It is a controversial pick, but I declare it the winner.

Other cool outfits from day 1 included this gorgeous little 60s-retro blue print frock on Lea Seydoux (also in the Woody Allen movie) and the stunning, floor-length Amarni Prive blue gown on Karolina Kurkova. I also really liked her hair, don't you?

Uma Thurman arrived earlier in a lovely Louis Vuitton day dress — something that would look right at home in my wardrobe I do believe. And Chinese actress Gong Li was absolutely breathtaking in that wine-coloured Roberto Cavalli show stopper. What a great first day of fashion. I will keep a watching brief on Cannes and bring you all the top looks and trends as the week progresses. Don't go anywhere, as they say.
