The Art of Fashion

Prince William and Kate Middleton Choose High Street Fashion for Official Engagement Portraits
The first official images of the newly engaged Prince William and Kate Middleton say more about them as a modern couple than any amount of Palace commentary.
Much has been made already of the warmth and obvious affection that they show in the pictures — most unusual for official Royal portraits. However I think the signs go deeper.
First of all they chose Mario Testino as the photographer. He is a fashion photographer, popular and hip around the globe. They are tapped into this. In addition he also shot the most accessible and naturally beautiful images of Princess Diana shortly before she died. The choice of MT as the official photographer is very modern and exactly what the celebrity culture of the UK would appreciate.
And secondly the garments they are wearing in the pictures are good old high street fashion. Certainly on the upper end of the high street, but chain store choices never the less.
In the delightfully cuddly first image, Kate (or Miss Catherine Middleton) is wearing a blouse from Whistles with her jeans. I love Whistles and they have had a massive fashion turn around since Jane Stephenson (ex-TopShop) took over. An excellent choice that is both fashionable and chic.
In the second image, minimalist dressing is fantastically on-trend. This cream dress is from Reiss, the first choice for elegant and quirky work wear for young Brits.
Brilliant choices. Glamorously democratic and accessible. Is Kate the next Michelle Obama for fashion?
