The very lovely Blake Lively attended the Costume Institute Gala on Monday night dressed in Chanel couture as the date of Karl Lagerfeld. You know, the fashion Kaiser. No pressure there then. So how did Karl make it a more relaxed affair? Well, he arranged to meet Blake before the ball at a diner called 3 Guys on Madison Avenue, where they were surrounded by 80-year-old patrons and they drank diet coke. And this is the photo that proves it. Even the Kaiser slums it sometimes — and takes the Upper East Side princess with him.

Of course, later, she looked like a draped goddess on one of the most important fashion red carpets of the year. I didn't love the look, but I love the story!
