This weekend I read that the bookies in England have stopped taking bets on who the designer of THE DRESS is going to be. Odds are so far on Kate Middleton selecting Bruce Oldfield as the dress designer for her big day, that there is no further trade allowed.
Though no official announcement has been made—yet—Bruce Oldfield is considered the front runner to design Kate Middleton’s wedding dress for the royal nuptials on April 29. And looking at the dresses above — particularly the one on the left — you can't help but think it may very well be a good idea.
Bruce Oldfield is a safe pair of hands. He understands Royal protocol and what is appropriate — after all Princess Diana regularly wore his pieces and he designed the wedding dress of the exquisite Queen Rania of Jordan.
But. Sigh. I still have a tiny bit of hope that Kate will go for someone and something a bit more modern. The hipper UK designers like Alice Temperley, Dame Viv Westwood, Stella McCartney, Twenty8Twelve (from Sienna Miller) and dare I say Victoria Beckham, would be a more contemporary choice and all of whom could whip up a dazzler of an outfit. These designers have more international and FASHION cache. And make more of a statement about the future of English fashion. I think it would be a pity to lose the opportunity to someone already so well established.
PS: My hopes of a Beckham wedding dress were rather encouraged by seeing David and Wills hanging out in Zurich all last week at the FIFA presentations. Did the subject come up? Will Kate choose a VB going away outfit maybe? Oooooooh, please, please let that happen!
