Summer often conjures up images of outdoor events like concerts, with music fans out enjoying the weather and the tunes. So often we fawn over the music-makers, but how often are we given the chance to really appreciate the instruments that make it all possible?
Since February, The Metropolitan Museum of Art has been home to a wonderful exhibit called Guitar Heroes: Legendary Craftsmen from Italy to New York City. This special exhibition displays the works of three Italian-American guitar makers (the craft is called "lutherie"): John D'Angelico, James D'Aquisto, and John Manteleone, placing them in a historical timeline of stringed instruments going back as far as the sixteenth century. Their stringed instruments are fittingly-displayed in glass cases to be admired, as proper works of art: and they certainly are beautiful.
Even if you know nothing about the workings of a guitar, the displays are accompanied by informative placards. Also on display are initial sketches of designs, for those of us who are interested in the initial creative process. There are also gallery concerts, made possible by D'Addario and Company, Inc., allowing visitors' ears to be engaged along with their eyes. If you're looking for something to do with your weekend, the Guitar Heroes exhibit will be open until July 4. Don't miss out on the opportunity!
